Monthly GDP May 2025

  • Real GDP grew by 0.5% in the three months to May, despite the recent monthly contractions.
  • Services output rose by 0.1% in May, following a 0.2% fall in April. The sector was supported by growth in information and communication (+0.5%), and in accommodation services (+1.2%), though professional, scientific and technical activities (–0.5%) continued to drag.
  • Consumer-facing services rose by 0.3% in May, driven by growth in retail trade (+0.5%) and accommodation (+1.2%), partially offset by ongoing weakness in food and beverage services (-0.5%).
  • The production sector contracted by 0.9% in May, after falling by 0.9% in April. Manufacturing declined by 1.0%, led by notable weakness in pharmaceuticals (-4.2%), machinery and equipment (-2.2%), and transport equipment (-1.6%).
  • Construction output fell by 0.6% in May, reversing a 1.1% rise in April, with declines in both new work (-0.5%) and repair and maintenance (–0.7%).
  • Year-on-year GDP in May 2025 was 1.0% higher than in May 2024.
