GfK Consumer Confidence Index September 2021

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence score decreased by five points to -13 in September. Disappointingly, this falls back below pre-pandemic levels and is the weakest since April, when the country was emerging from its third national lockdown.
  • All measures of the index fell, with sharp falls in the forward-looking personal finances and general economic situation components.

General economic situation

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months fell by one point to -43 in September. This is 18 points higher than the same month a year ago.
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months plunged 10 points to -16. However, this is still 22 points higher than in September 2020.

Personal finances

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months dropped four points to -4 in September, three points above the same month a year ago. 
  • The forward-looking measure of personal finances fell six points to +5. This is four points higher than in September 2020.

Major purchases

  • The major purchases index decreased by three points to -6 in September, the lowest reading since May. However, this is still 15 points higher than a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure)

  • The savings index fell by three points to +22 in September. This is two points higher than twelve months ago.
