GfK Consumer Confidence Index May 2024

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index increased two points in May to -17. 
  • Four measures were up and one was down compared with last month.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months is up two points at -39. This is 15 points higher than a year ago in May 2023. 
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months increased by four points to -17. This is 13 points better than the same month a year ago.

Personal finances

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months is up one point to -10, ten points better than a year ago.
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months increased five points to +7, which is 15 points higher than the same time last year.

Major purchases

  • The Major Purchase Index fell one point to -26. This is two points lower than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • The Savings Index rose one point to +27 in May. This is eight points higher than a year ago.
