GfK Consumer Confidence Index June 2022

Headlines:

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index sank to a new record low in June, falling one point to -41. 
  • Four out of five measures were down, with only the major purchases index remaining flat.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months fell two points to -65 in June. This is 18 points lower than the same month a year ago. 
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months fell one point to -57. This is a staggering 55 points lower than in June 2021.

Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months decreased one point to -23 in June, 23 points worse than a year ago.
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months fell three points to -28, which is 39 points lower than this time last year.

Major purchases

  • After falling for six consecutive months, the major purchases index stayed the same in June at -35. This is 30 points lower than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure)

  • Consumers’ propensity to save was down one point in June, with the savings index still in positive territory at +9. This is 12 points lower than a year ago.
