GfK Consumer Confidence Index July 2022

Headlines:

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index remained at a record low in July, staying flat at -41.
  • Two out of five measures were up, one was down and two were the same in comparison to the previous month.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months fell one point to -66 in July. This is 23 points lower than the same month a year ago.
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months stayed the same at -57. This is 52 points lower than in July 2021.

Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months also stayed the same at -23 in July, 22 points worse than a year ago.
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months increased two points to -26, which is 37 points lower than this time last year.

Major purchases

  • The major purchases index rose for the first time in seven months, increasing one point to -34. This is 36 points lower than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure)

  • Consumers’ propensity to save was up four points in July, with the savings index coming in at +13. This is 7 points lower than a year ago.
